1917年出生的Dizzy Gillespie 迪吉 葛拉斯彼，本名John Birks Gillespie，他的艺名Dizzy是“晕眩”的意思，而他也的确是一位令人目瞪口呆头晕目眩的演奏大师，极端高速的长段即兴独奏，精湛的和声与节奏素养，永远笑容满面，永远乐于指导提携后进，甚至于他向上翘起45度的小喇叭和演奏时两颊鼓起如牛蛙的特异景致，对许多喜爱他音乐的人来说，都成了爵士乐的精神象征。
葛拉斯彼早期出道江湖的时候在一些演奏摇摆乐的大乐团里担任小喇叭手，但他一直希望建构出自己的音乐体系，据说当年他在Cab Callaway的卡拉威大乐团任职的时候，常在练习时试验他的创新和声观念而遭到团长痛斥，尽管如此，葛拉斯彼仍然渐渐地将他的理论架构完整，在与其他杰出的爵士乐手如萨克斯风手Charlie Parker查理帕克等人的合作之下，爵士乐最重要的一次革命性变革，也就是Bebop咆勃爵士，终于诞生，葛拉斯彼和帕克被称为咆勃爵士的开山始祖，对当代爵士乐的影响无比深远。
葛拉斯彼对古巴和非洲音乐中的节奏有精深的研究，也就是他将这些不同的节奏元素引进爵士乐中，并且加以发扬光大，从他所创作的曲子如〈Night In Turnisia〉之中，可以听出他丰富的节奏感。 葛拉斯彼提携指导了许多日后的大师，包括Miles Davis迈尔士戴维斯，Clifford Brown克里夫布朗等人，戴维斯回忆说:“当年我向Dizzy请教和弦问题，他走到钢琴旁边，一遍遍的示范给我看。”
葛拉斯彼是技巧最高超的几位小喇叭演奏家之一，他与帕克合作的专辑《Bird & Diz》里,这两位不世出的奇才，在交叉追逐彼此应答的独奏中，飚出令人难以想象的快速即兴乐句,和弦、节奏极端复杂，却又精准无比，超人般的演奏能力，令人叹为观止。
